What is Private Copying?  

Private copying is a fee designed to compensate authors and performing artists for the reproduction of their works on certain types of recording media.  

When purchasing storage devices such as USB drives, external hard drives, smartphones, or tablets, a fixed portion of the price is allocated to creators, artists, and producers.  

In exchange for this fee, authors, creators, artists, and producers allow the reproduction of legally acquired works (music, series, films, etc.) on all personal viewing devices, strictly for private use.

Who Benefits from Private Copying?

  

1. **Individuals**:  

   - Individuals are free to copy legally acquired works for personal use.  

2. **Authors and Creators**:  

   - Authors receive compensation proportional to the success of their work.  

3. **Cultural Initiatives**:  

   - Funds are allocated to support new cultural projects.

### **How Are the Collected Funds Distributed?**  

- **75%** is directly redistributed to creators, authors, and artists.  

- **25%** is allocated to cultural projects and initiatives.  

In 2021, Copie France collected €295 million in private copying fees.  

- Over **200,000 authors, artists, and producers** benefit annually.  

- More than **10,000 cultural projects** are supported each year, including festivals and arts education programs.  

Private copying is thus a legal license and an exception to copyright law, designed to balance consumer freedom with the rights of creators.

### **How Is Private Copying Calculated?**  

For USB drives and memory cards, a fixed scale applies based on storage capacity:  

- **Up to 8 GB**: €1  

- **> 8 GB to 16 GB**: €1.50  

- **> 16 GB to 32 GB**: €2  

- **> 32 GB to 64 GB**: €2.80  

- **> 64 GB to 128 GB**: €3.40  

- **> 128 GB to 256 GB**: €4  

- **Over 256 GB**: €4.60
